Milkha Singh: How much do you know about Flying Sikh?

Born in Govindpura, Punjab (present-day Punjab, Pakistan), he had a tragic childhood. Flying Sikh Milkha Singh’s parents and some of his siblings were killed in the violence that broke out during Partition.

After living in various refugee camps and sometimes even at the railway station, Milkha Singh moved in with a married sister in Delhi. However, as a result of the traumatic experience he faced during Partition, he was inclined towards becoming a bandit.
After much persuasion from his brother, Milkha decided to join the Indian Army. There was a lot of change in his life when he started running.

First through inter-services tournaments and later at the international level, Flying Sikh Milkha Singh proved his worth.
India’s Flying Sikh made many records and won many medals. His dream race and Olympic qualification at the Asian Games catapulted him to coveted status. His 400 meters national record stood for 38 years!

Former Indian track and field sprinter Milkha Singh was the first Indian male athlete to win a gold medal in individual athletics at the Commonwealth Games.

Affectionately called ‘The Flying Sikh’, this title was given to him by former President of Pakistan General Ayub Khan. The President himself was highly respected for his sporting achievements.

Milkha brought glory to our motherland by winning many gold medals in international sporting events like Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. He entered the 400 meters race in 1960.

As one of the favorites of the Olympic Games and even led the race until the 250 meter mark, he lost momentum and was overtaken by other runners.

Sadly for them and India, our gold medal contender could not even win the bronze! Yet despite the defeat, Milkha set an Indian national record in 400 metres.
